Author an aligned allocation manifest
Objectives
Halcyon Clinics must allocate imaging, staff and telemetry networks inside one /24. The service owner calls the telemetry broadcast address its 'last host' and asks you to copy it into the assignment manifest. Recalculate rather than copying the label.
Use the smallest sufficient ordinary subnet for each demand, allocating largest-first at the lowest available aligned address. Fill every field with exact numeric values or dotted-decimal addresses and CIDRs as appropriate. Demands include gateways and all infrastructure; there is no additional reserve. Record telemetry's full host boundaries and the exact free block left over.
Approved address demand and placement rule
parent: 198.51.100.0/24 imaging_required_usable: 100 staff_required_usable: 50 telemetry_required_usable: 20 placement: largest-first, lowest available aligned address owner_note: telemetry broadcast is its last assignable host
Checks the server runs (6)
- Largest demand has its minimal aligned block and capacity
- Staff follows without overlap and meets capacity
- Telemetry uses its minimal remaining aligned block
- Telemetry network and broadcast are exact
- Telemetry first and last usable hosts exclude reserved endpoints
- Remaining address space is recorded as one exact CIDR
Check names are all you see here: the expectations that decide pass or fail, and the reference solution, stay on the server.
Step-by-step hints
The guided walkthrough, in full. It is free: no XP cost, and it does not touch the paid hint ladder or the reveal gate.
- Step 1
Size then place the largest service
Find the least host-bit count meeting the largest total after endpoint reservations. Place that block at the beginning of the approved parent and record its usable capacity.
Largest demand has its minimal aligned block and capacity
- Step 2
Continue the allocation
Repeat the sizing calculation for the remaining services in descending order. Start each at the lowest free address that satisfies its own alignment; verify the intervals never overlap.
Staff follows without overlap and meets capacityTelemetry uses its minimal remaining aligned block
- Step 3
Separate boundaries from assignments
For the final service, derive the all-zero and all-one host-bit addresses. Move inward from those reserved endpoints to identify the assignable range rather than trusting the owner's terminology.
Telemetry network and broadcast are exactTelemetry first and last usable hosts exclude reserved endpoints
- Step 4
Reconcile the parent
Subtract the allocated intervals from the parent. Express the leftover interval as a canonical network and prefix; verify its union with the allocations reconstructs the parent exactly.
Remaining address space is recorded as one exact CIDR
Rules summary
XP on pass
40 bonus XP the first time every check goes green.
Paid hints
2 available. Each costs 25% of the lab XP (about 10 XP).
Reveal solution
Scores 0 XP and unlocks only after 3 check runs.
Attempt cap
60 check runs per learner. The runner warns you in the last 10.
